What is the Glen Canyon Dam?

The Glen Canyon Dam is a massive concrete arch dam built on the Colorado River, just a few miles from Wahweap Marina. It’s one of the tallest dams in the United States, standing hundreds of feet high! It’s truly a sight to behold, especially from the nearby bridge or during a visitor center tour.

Building a Giant

Building the dam was a huge project that took many years, starting in 1956 and finishing in 1966. Thousands of workers used tons of concrete to create this enormous wall. Its main jobs are to store water for states in the Southwest (like California and Arizona) and to generate clean electricity for millions of homes.

How It Created Lake Powell

Once the dam was completed, the Colorado River began to back up behind it. Over time, as more and more water collected, it filled the deep canyons of Glen Canyon, slowly forming what we now know as Lake Powell. So, the dam is essentially the “stopper” that created this vast reservoir, allowing us to enjoy all the fun activities and amazing views today!
