What in the World is a Hydrofoil? And Why Should You Try It?

Have you ever dreamed of flying? Well, with a hydrofoil, you can get pretty close to flying, right on top of the water! A hydrofoil is a special board that has a fin with wings (like an airplane wing!) underneath it. As you move faster, these wings lift the board out of the water, making it feel like you’re floating or flying above the surface.

Types of Hydrofoils You Might See

• Electric Hydrofoils (eFoils)

These are super popular now! You stand on a board, hold a remote control, and a quiet electric motor pushes you forward. As you gain speed, the board lifts up, and you glide smoothly a few feet above the water. It’s like surfing, but without the waves, and you feel like you’re floating on air!

• Traditional Hydrofoils (Towed)

These are often pulled behind a boat, like water skis or wakeboards. You can sit, stand, or even kneel on them. As the boat pulls you faster, the hydrofoil lifts you up for a cool ride.

Riding a hydrofoil is a unique experience. It’s quiet, smooth, and gives you an amazing view of Lake Powell’s stunning scenery from a whole new perspective. It’s also a fantastic way to feel the thrill of speed and balance!

Your Starting Points: Marinas on Lake Powell

To get started on your Lake Powell adventure, especially if you’re looking to try out hydrofoils, you’ll likely head to one of the main marinas. These are like mini-towns on the water, offering everything you need for a fun day or week.

Stateline Marina: A Quiet Gateway

Located right near the border of Arizona and Utah (hence “Stateline”), this marina is often a bit quieter than some of the larger ones. It’s a great spot if you’re staying in or near Page, Arizona.

• What You’ll Find at Stateline Marina

Stateline is known for being a convenient launch point for boats. While it might not have as many services as bigger marinas, it offers essentials like boat ramps and parking. It’s often a good choice for people bringing their own boats or looking for a quick and easy way to get out on the water. If you’re looking to rent a hydrofoil, you might find local rental companies operating nearby or offering pick-up services from this area.

• Perfect for:

Those looking for easy lake access, a quieter atmosphere, and a starting point for exploring the northern parts of Lake Powell.

Wahweap Marina: The Main Hub of Activity

Wahweap Marina is the largest and most popular marina on Lake Powell, located just a short drive from Page, Arizona. Think of it as the bustling heart of Lake Powell!

• What Wahweap Marina Offers

Wahweap has everything you could need for a lake vacation. You’ll find:

  • Restaurants and snack bars
  • A lodge and lodging options
  • Boat rentals (from small ski boats to houseboats!)
  • Stores where you can buy supplies, snacks, and souvenirs
  • Boat ramps and plenty of parking
  • Guided tours of the lake

Because it’s such a busy and well-equipped area, Wahweap is a prime location for hydrofoil rentals. Many rental companies set up shop here or offer direct access to their equipment, making it easy to try out an eFoil or traditional hydrofoil for an hour or a day.

• Perfect for:

Families, first-time visitors, anyone looking for a full range of services, and the easiest access to hydrofoil rentals and other water sports.
